Although all rules are meant to be broken, here are a few helpful rules-of-thumb that you can use when designing your own sign.

Letter Size

Here is a good reference when trying to determine what size letters you should consider when designing a sign. The "Maximum Readable Distance" is the farthest distance a person could comprehend the sign, while the "Readable Distance for Maximum Impact" is the suggested distance when trying to get a person to view the sign in a hurry and to comprehend the message.

Note: Timing and viewing angle will have an impact of the Readable Distance of the sign and should be considered when designing the sign.

Font Selection

The font/typestyle you choose will have a very strong influence on the overall impact and effectiveness of the sign. Carefully choosing a font that best fits the needs of the sign will be well worth the time.

The chart below illustrates just a few examples of the many fonts available. Each style has its own personality as well as suitability for signs.

Arial Baskerville Old Face
Times New Roman Stencil
Courier New Script MT Bold

Color Contrast

The colors that you choose to incorporate into your sign will have a large impact on the overall effectiveness and impact of the sign. Without enough contrast, the message may be lost. With colors that are visually unpleasing, potential customers may never come through your front door.
